We’re still deep in our pie crust era here, and today’s project is my favorite quick fall trick, lattice pie mug toppers!
They are not only impressive, but wildly simple to make. A bit of cutting and criss-crossing (just follow along with the photos below) and you will be quickly on the way to wowing your cozy guests.

The baked mug toppers keep warm drinks toasty while you finish dinner, and they are the perfect treat to have alongside cider on a cold day.
They’re little pie crust lids for your cider mugs, hot chocolates, winter Hot Toddys, or even your next cup of coffee.
The recipe does not specify which type of pie crust you must use.
So grab your favorite recipe, or pick up a package from the store… It’ll all come out tasty in the end.
You know that I’m always team pre-made, but still super cute on our busy fall nights.

Lattice Pie Mug Toppers
Equipment
- Rolling Pin
- Parchment paper
- Pizza Cutter
Ingredients
- 2 packs Pie Crusts
- 2 Egg Whites
- 1/4 Cup Cinnamon Sugar
Instructions
- Make the crusts by rolling out dough for two pie crusts, if you’re making your own you can roll it into rectangular shapes
- Using a pizza cutter, slice each set of dough into 1/2 or 3/4 inch strips. Arrange one set of pie strips about 1/4 inch apart on some parchment paper, or a silicone baking mat. This will make it easy to slide onto your baking sheet later.
- Create a lattice from the pie dough, weaving the strips together as shown above.
- Place a sheet of parchment on top and gently press the dough flat. This will keep the final lattice structure from falling apart.
- Cut out the rounds using a cutter or bowl slightly larger than the mugs you plan on using to serve the cider. If you’re using a cutter, flip it upside down and use the dull edge. This will further secure the lattice. Remove the leftover dough from around your cut out circles.
- Brush the tops with a little egg white and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon sugar. I used 1/4 cup sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Bake at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes

Making the cinnamon sugar and having extras tastes lovely on a warm slice of buttered bread in the morning.
Pop one on top of a warm cider, serve it up, and wait for the “you made these?!” reactions to roll in.

Cozy, sweet, and the easiest way to feel like you’ve got you are party ready in five minutes this fall.
P.S. Use any leftover pie crust to make these cute pumpkin pie pops or try your hand at the fancy Piecaken recipe.
