By now, it’s no secret that I love turning totally random things into birthday candles. We’ve lit up cherries, vegetable candles, and made crayon birthday candles, but these walnut candles might be my favorite DIY this season.
Did you know you can literally light nuts on fire and make your own candles?
True story, I’ll show you how.

Because nuts are naturally oily, they burn beautifully.
We tried pecans and almonds in our preparation as well, but the walnuts totally win for fall vibes.
They give off a cozy, rustic glow that feels right at home on a fall birthday cake table.
Bonus: they’re edible!
No scraping off wax or cleaning up melted messes when the party’s over.

The science-y part (which my teens think is magic): flames love oil.
So light up a walnut, and it burns bright for about five minutes.
Just enough time to belt out “Happy Birthday” or bring some glow to that Thanksgiving pie moment.

We set ours up on my new artisan glazed cake stand, with a cute blue ceramic bowl nearby, complete with a chalk-label front for anyone who wants to join in on the walnut-lighting fun.
It’s quirky, cozy, and possibly the easiest fall cake topper around.
