Origami stars are the most whimsical topping to any cake, party table, or lawn decoration.
These 3D stars are made from simple colored cardstock and are elegant enough for any birthday party, adult or child!
No need to be a professional origami artist. These DIY paper stars look harder than they are because they are just that beautiful.
What you need to make 3D paper stars
- Bright Cardstock (pearlescent would be perfect, too!)
- Scissors
- Dish
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Glitter, optional
- Fishing line, twine or hot glue, depending on how you plan to use your stars
How to make 3D origami stars
- Create a circle. Start by making a circle – I found tracing a bowl to be the easiest way to get a perfect circle. We used three different-sized bowls to make these stars.
- Mark your circle. Next, place a dot at the top of the circle. Measure the circle’s height and divide by two. Then measure that distance around the circle with a straight-edge ruler, placing dots as you go. For example, if your circle is 8 inches long, place the next dot 4 inches from the first. Keep going around the circle, placing the dots as you go.
- Create your star template. Once all the dots are in place, draw a straight-edge line between them, and cut along the line – you’ll now have a six-point star.
- Fold your star into a 3D shape. You only have to do this once! Now you have a star template you can use to trace and cut out the other stars. To make the stars 3D, fold in on the low points and fold out on the high points.
- Decorate and display your stars. Use fishing line and hot glue to make a garland that looks like a bright and festive floating galaxy. Or attach a kitchen skewer to the top and bottom points to use the stars as cake toppers. String onto presents as wrapping details. You can even make a sweet mobile with these beauties.
Style Tip: Add glitter to the raised points of your stars for added sparkle!
Turn your paper stars into a garland
These stars can easily become a garland!
Use a hole punch to add a hole to one point of your star. String twine through the hole and around your wool garland.
My felt ball garland would be a perfect base for these stars! The best part? With Amazon, they can be delivered in less than 48 hours.
Whether you’re making DIY cake toppers, a whimsical party garland, or a magical mobile, these little paper stars are guaranteed to add a bit of sparkle and wonder to your celebration.
Happy Crafting.
